If you enjoy a few beers, shots or glasses of wine to relax after a long workweek, then you’re doing just fine!
But, a low-carb diet can make alcohol consumption a little trickier. You may find that your low-carb diet affects your alcohol tolerance levels.
Even worse, you may find out that your favorite cocktail contains more the 30g of carbs per serving and you might give up drinking all together. No worries, we have assembled list you must try because Walmart delivers the best keto cocktails.
How does alcohol affect the body on low carb?
While sticking to a ketosis diet, you may notice that your tolerance for alcohol might drop significantly, similar to the affects of taking a break from drinking all together. Consider it a good thing because it takes less alcohol to get that tipsy feeling.
It’s important to mention that not all alcohol is created equally.
Of course, the process where yeast acts on a sugar compound to make carbon dioxide and alcohol always stays the same. But the type of sugar compound will be the constant variable.
Let’s take a look at one of my favorite alcoholic beverage to consume. I love a hoppy, rich and delicious craft brewed IPA.
What is so wrong with beer on keto diet?
Beer is generally made from barley, hops, yeast and water. The main ingredient, barley, is broken down into a sugar maltose, which the yeast consumes to make alcohol.
Full flavored beer is dangerous for the keto diet because it leaves far too many carbs that can stop or slow ketosis within the body.
Some people may react to alcohol differently than others
While one person may not feel the affects of alcohol on their diet, another may have their progress drastically slowed. Test your ketone levels often to make sure you are staying inline with the diet goals you have set.
Observe and pay close attention to any fluctuations. If you are seeing negative results, maybe you will have to eliminate alcohol all together.
If you do decide that booze is for you and your body can tolerate alcohol digestion, then you still want to choose low-carb options.
Alcohol slows fat burning on keto diet
Many people find that alcohol slows the rate of weight loss. This may be true for some, and not for others.
The liver begins to process alcohol as soon as it enters the body. The ketosis fat burning process is stopped to remove the toxic alcohol as soon as possible.
The rate for which alcohol metabolizes is different for each person.
A person on a carbohydrate rich diet has a surplus of glycogen stored in their liver. Glycogen is a by-product of glucose, made up of sugar and carbs, and is long-term energy storage.
If you consume alcohol while sticking to a high carb diet, the body struggles to quickly process the toxin.
In a low carb diet, the liver has depleted the glycogen storage and the body is running on fat instead of carbs. The body has resorted to burning body fat, and is prepared to efficiently metabolize alcohol upon consumption.
As a result, if you are on a keto diet, you may notice that your body begins processing alcohol faster than before, which causes you to feel drunk a little sooner.
Alcohol is empty calories
Fact: Alcohol is actually the fourth macronutrient digested by the body, which gives off 7 calories per gram.
Since alcohol is not essential for survival and is also considered toxic to humans, it’s ignored as an essential macronutrient.
The truth is, alcohol contains calories without any added nutritional value, vitamins or minerals.
Your body will use the small amount of converted energy, but it doesn’t last long. Therefore, don’t approach alcohol as a regular part of your overall healthy diet.
Feeling a Hangover? What Helps?
While consuming alcohol, be sure to DRINK WATER. Home safely and headed to bed, DRINK WATER. Wake up not feeling yourself, DRINK WATER.
No need to take any additional supplements or magical elixirs. There are no supernatural remedies or quick cures, sorry!
As a result, water will cure your woes and even prevent the cause.
Avoid the trigger by drinking a cup of water in between each alcoholic beverage you consume. This easy fix will save you from any major nausea, headache or overwhelming misery the following day.
What alcohol can we enjoy on a keto diet?
Don’t be afraid of a little beer or wine. Here are a few low carb options for you to still enjoy.

Sugar Free Spicy Margarita
Is it taco Tuesday yet? You don’t need to give up your tacos and happy hour margaritas on Tuesdays!
Keto tacos, fathead nachos and homemade guacamole are one of my all time favorite food groups. I actually think I could even live in Mexico because I love the cuisine so much.
I’ll spare myself for now, because my keto diet probably wouldn’t last long, but I won’t rule it out for the destination of a beach vacation.
Needless to say, this Margarita variation will go great with your next taco Tuesday. I love the freshness from the lime, the essence provided by the orange extract and a little sugar substitute if needed.
- 1 1/2 ounces tequila
- 2 tablespoons fresh lime, juice
- 2 ounces cup water
- 1/4 teaspoon orange extract
- Optional: 1 tablespoon stevia
- Optional: jalapeno, sliced
Shake well or blend the ingredients.
Serve over ice, in a rocks glass, with a salted rim and a lime wedge.
Grab your favorite keto taco and enjoy!

Bubbly Vodka Spritzer
I love all the flavors of LaCroix, who doesn’t? Not only do they taste good, but also have ZERO sugar. Our fridge is full of LaCroix heaven!
These bubbly fun LaCroix cocktails are a spring hit during my outdoor keto diet picnics. I serve with delicious avocado deviled eggs for smash hit.
Pick your vodka, add a splash bubbly, and stir. Enjoy!
- 3 ounces vodka
- 1 can LaCroix
Low Carb Moscow mule
This is my husband’s favorite drink. I’m a huge fan of ginger too, so you can find me taking a few sips from his.
You can also find him munching on a handful of spicy buffalo keto chicken tenders on game night.
He occasionally substitutes for rum or whiskey depending on his mood, but I know the base stays the same.
The key to success is start by making your own low-carb ginger syrup. This helps to reduce the carbs found in the original version.
Sugar Free Ginger Syrup
- 1/2 fresh ginger root, peeled and sliced
- 2 cups water
- 1/3 cup stevia
Make the syrup by simmering the ingredients for 10 minutes.
Cool and store for up to 2 weeks.
Making your own syrup is actually super cheap and easy. Make it with love and use fresh ingredient.
The best part of all, you can read and pronounce the ingredients list.
Sugar Free Moscow Mule
I fell in love with a Moscow Mule on the cruise we did last year.
I’m a ginger ale girl, definitely why I fell in love with the first sip!
The best part is that I can make a low carb version at home.
- 4 ounces vodka
- 1 ounce fresh lime, juice
- 1 ounce sugar free ginger syrup
- 8 ounces diet ginger ale
- Fresh mint leaves
Mix well and serve over ice in your favorite copper mug.
Garnish with a few fresh mint leaves.
Chocolate Mint Julep
The mint julep is a classic southern cocktail. My grandfather-enjoyed horse racing, so this reminds me of the Kentucky Derby.
This variation uses chocolate mint, which gives a slight twist. Most likely you may opt for traditional spearmint because unless you grow it yourself, it’s rare to find the chocolate mint variety in the markets.
Needless to say, I make these keto diet soft pretzels and the crowd goes wild. Friends, cocktails and low-carb junk food, what else do we need for a party?

- Crushed ice

Low Carb Mojito
This is another outdoor favorite. The girls can’t get enough of this one. I consider this to be one of the best keto cocktails when I’m in the mood for a little rum.
This drink requires handy muddling skills to crush the lime wedges with the mint leaves. I find myself always mixing up a few batches of this delicious cocktail on a hot picnic day.
Sometimes vodka is on the drink menu, so it’s a quick fix to substitute for the rum. No problems here, Walmart delivers the best keto cocktails so the party continues as it was!
Muddle the lime wedges with the mint leaves at the bottom of a large glass. Be sure to release all of the essential oils and juices.
Add the rum, ice and stevia.
Mix well and then top with soda.
Low carb sangria
Traditionally, Sangria is from Portugal and Spain.
As we all know they use chopped fruit, but for a Ketosis dieter, most fruits are on the must avoid food list.
So, how can we make a ketosis-friendly sangria?
Red wine is a favorite, but sometimes it needs a little extra kick. A splash of vodka always does the trick for me.
To reduce the added sugars, I also substitute the fresh fruit for some bubbly soda. Sip while sitting outdoors and enjoying a hot sunny day!
Mix the red wine, vodka and ice.
Top with soda, and stir.
Caribbean rum punch
Hard to resist Captain Morgan, but the keto friendly I had to try. No idea we could accomplish this, but its pure magic.
Furthermore, I enjoy mine with a float of dark rum, but feel free to mix the two when making your cocktail.
If you’re looking for that island twist, give this recipe a try. Throw on a pair of your favorite flip flops, I’m sure you’ll enjoy sitting and relaxing on the beach even more.

I also love gin, so sometimes I switch up the call. Either way, this is one of the best keto diet cocktails.
I also enjoy sipping my martini with a simple bar food snack.
To quench my thirst and share a nibble with my partner, I also reach for a batch of cheese stuffed mushrooms as the perfect addition.
