If you have an old tulle skirt, tutu, or party skirt hiding in the back of a closet, don’t toss it out. With a few fabric scraps, felt shapes, ribbon, and simple sewing, you can transform it into a magical Moon & Stars Fairy costume that is perfect for Halloween, dress-up days, school events, or imaginative play.

This DIY fairy costume is especially beginner-friendly because you can build the entire look around clothing your child already owns. A navy, black, lavender, gray, or deep blue shirt becomes the base, while the old tulle skirt gets a dreamy celestial makeover with moons, stars, ribbons, and sparkly details.

For more affordable Halloween inspiration, take a look at these DIY girls’ costumes using clothes from home. The best part? You do not need a complicated sewing pattern.

This project works beautifully with an old tutu, layered tulle skirt, or inexpensive thrift-store party skirt. Imperfect tulle is completely fine. In fact, a little unevenness can make the finished costume feel more whimsical.

For a classic nighttime fairy look, choose a color palette such as navy, black, silver, lavender, pale blue, and white. For a softer version, try blush pink, dusty purple, champagne, and gold.

Materials You Will Need

Top-down flatlay of supplies for a celestial fairy costume, including an old lavender tulle skirt, white top, felt and glitter fabric, ribbon, pom-poms, thread, pins, scissors, paper templates, glue gun, sewing machine, iron, and moon-and-star decorations.
  • 1 old tulle skirt or tutu
  • Long-sleeve shirt or leotard
  • Felt or fabric scraps in silver, white, gold, lavender, or blue
  • Small amount of glitter fabric, metallic fabric, or sequined scraps
  • Coordinating polyester thread
  • Hand-sewing needle
  • Sewing machine, optional
  • Fabric scissors
  • Paper scissors
  • Paper for templates
  • Pencil
  • Fabric marker or tailor’s chalk
  • Pins or sewing clips
  • Ribbon in different widths
  • Small pom-poms or fabric stars, optional
  • Elastic or ribbon for a headband
  • Hot glue or fabric glue, optional
  • Lightweight fusible web, optional
  • Iron and ironing board

For children, avoid heavy beads or decorations that could pull down the tulle.

Step 1: Prepare the Old Tulle Skirt

Begin by checking the skirt for stains, damaged elastic, loose seams, or torn tulle.

Wash the skirt according to the fabric-care instructions and allow it to dry completely.

Lay it flat and gently separate all the tulle layers with your fingers.

Trim any badly damaged edges, but don’t worry about making the hem perfectly even. A slightly irregular hem actually works well for a fairy costume.

If the waistband elastic feels loose, replace it or tighten it before decorating.

Step 2: Choose Your Moon and Star Design

Lay the skirt flat and decide how decorative you want it to be.

For a simple design, scatter approximately 10–15 stars around the skirt with two or three crescent moons.

For a fuller celestial look, mix:

  • Large stars
  • Tiny stars
  • Crescent moons
  • Circles representing planets
  • Sparkly dots
  • Ribbon streamers

Keep the decorations concentrated toward the lower half of the skirt so the waistband remains soft and comfortable.

Step 3: Make Paper Moon and Star Templates

Draw several simple star shapes onto paper.

Try making three different sizes:

  • Small stars: approximately 1 inch
  • Medium stars: approximately 2 inches
  • Large stars: approximately 3 inches

For the crescent moon, trace a circle and then draw a second overlapping curved line inside it.

Cut out your paper templates.

Place them against the skirt before cutting your fabric so you can adjust the scale.

Step 4: Cut the Fabric Decorations

Place your moon and star templates on felt, metallic fabric, glitter fabric, or leftover cotton scraps.

Trace around each template with a fabric marker.

Cut the shapes carefully.

Felt is one of the easiest choices for beginners because the edges do not fray.

For extra dimension, layer smaller stars over larger ones. For example, place a silver star over a navy felt star.

You can also create small round “planets” using leftover circles of fabric.

Step 5: Arrange the Stars and Moons

Spread the tulle skirt flat on your work surface.

Arrange your fabric shapes on the uppermost tulle layer.

Avoid creating a perfectly symmetrical layout. A scattered arrangement looks more natural and magical.

Place a few larger shapes around the front and sides, then fill the empty spaces with smaller stars.

Step back and look at the overall design before attaching anything.

Take a quick photo with your phone so you can remember the placement.

Step 6: Attach the Moon and Stars

Hand sewing is often the easiest method for attaching decorations to tulle.

Thread a needle with coordinating thread.

Use several small stitches through the center or edges of each felt shape. Be careful not to pull the thread too tightly because tulle can gather easily.

You do not need to sew around the entire perimeter of every star.

For larger moons, use three or four secure stitching points.

If you prefer a no-sew version, use a small amount of fabric glue. Always test the glue on scrap tulle first.

Step 7: Add Ribbon Streamers

Step-by-step collage showing navy, lavender, blue, white, silver, and glitter ribbons cut into strips, looped, and attached around the waistband of a celestial tulle skirt.

Cut pieces of narrow ribbon approximately 12–24 inches long.

Use several different textures and colors such as:

  • Silver
  • Lavender
  • Navy
  • White
  • Pale blue

Fold each ribbon in half and attach it underneath the waistband or between the tulle layers.

Space the streamers around the sides and back of the skirt.

The ribbon should move freely when the child walks or spins.

Step 8: Make a Simple Fairy Top

Pair the skirt with a plain navy, black, lavender, or gray long-sleeve shirt.

Use leftover moon and star shapes to decorate the shirt.

Try adding:

  • One crescent moon on the chest
  • Three small stars near one shoulder
  • Stars running down one sleeve
  • A small constellation near the cuff

Hand sew the pieces in place or use fusible web if the shirt fabric can safely be pressed.

Keeping the top relatively simple allows the tulle skirt to remain the main feature.

Step 9: Make a Moon and Star Headband

DIY collage showing a headband decorated with a gold crescent moon, silver and lavender stars, and flowing pastel ribbon streamers to match a moon-and-stars fairy costume.

Cut two small felt stars and one crescent moon.

Attach them to a plain headband using hand stitches or fabric glue.

For a softer alternative, sew the decorations onto a piece of elastic that fits comfortably around the head.

Add a few short ribbons behind the moon for extra movement.

Step 10: Make Easy Fairy Wings

Craft tutorial collage showing wire shaped into four fairy wing loops, covered with lavender and blue tulle, decorated with glitter moons and stars, and finished with ribbon shoulder straps.

For an optional pair of wings, bend craft wire or repurpose lightweight costume wings you already own.

Cover them with sheer fabric, old tights, or leftover tulle.

Decorate the wings with small felt stars and moons.

Another quick option is to cut simple wing shapes from cardboard and cover them with metallic or sheer fabric.

Attach elastic loops so the wings can be worn like a backpack.

Step 11: Add Final Celestial Details

Sewing collage showing extra gold and silver stars, crescent moons, pastel pom-poms, ribbon bows, and small stitched accents being added to a lavender tulle fairy skirt for a finished celestial look.

Now add any extra scraps you still have.

Small pieces of glitter fabric can become tiny stars. Pom-poms can resemble planets. Metallic ribbon can be tied around the waistband.

You can even add a few embroidered stars using simple straight stitches.

Keep the decorations lightweight so the skirt remains comfortable.

Step 12: Finish the Moon & Stars Fairy Costume

Final styling collage showing the completed moon-and-stars fairy outfit with navy celestial top, layered lavender tulle skirt, crescent moon headband, fairy wings, white tights, and silver shoes.

Trim loose threads and check that every decoration is securely attached.

Gently fluff the tulle layers and arrange the ribbon streamers.

Pair the costume with leggings or tights and comfortable shoes.

Add the headband and optional fairy wings, and your DIY Moon & Stars Fairy costume is finished.

Turning an old tulle skirt into a Moon & Stars Fairy costume is an easy way to create something special without buying an entirely new Halloween outfit. Most of the project can be made with fabric scraps already sitting in your sewing room.

It is also easy to customize. Use gold stars for a celestial princess, purple moons for a whimsical witch fairy, or silver and navy for a dreamy midnight-sky look.

Instead of letting an old tutu collect dust, give it one more magical night. A handful of scraps, a little stitching, and a few sparkling stars can turn forgotten clothing into an adorable handmade Halloween costume.
