Upcycling fashion is one of my favorite ways to refresh my wardrobe without spending money—and today’s project might be my favorite yet. I turned an old oversized hoodie into a matching crop top and skirt set that I’m actually wearing to class.

This DIY is beginner-friendly, budget-friendly, and totally on-trend. If you’ve got an old sweatshirt hiding in your closet, you can make your own comfy-chic set in just an afternoon.

In this upcycle tutorial, I’ll walk you step-by-step through how to transform a hoodie into a two-piece outfit. The best part? No pattern is needed—just some basic sewing skills, scissors, and creativity.

Why Upcycle a Hoodie into a Set?

Hoodies are made of soft, cozy sweatshirt fleece—perfect for creating casual loungewear or sporty streetwear looks. By turning one hoodie into two pieces, you get double the wear from a single garment. Crop tops and mini skirts are trending on TikTok, Pinterest, and campus style guides, making this DIY the perfect blend of comfort and cool.

Plus, this project is super customizable: you can go for a fitted Y2K vibe, a looser oversized streetwear look, or even add drawstrings, slits, or ruffles to make it unique.

Materials You’ll Need

  • Sewing pins or clips
  • Tailor’s chalk or washable marker
  • Measuring tape

  • Safety pin (for threading elastic)
  • Optional: serger, decorative trim, or grommets for details

Step 1: Prep Your Hoodie

Start by laying your hoodie flat on a table. Make sure it’s smooth, with sleeves stretched out. Decide how cropped you want the top to be—usually right at or slightly above your natural waist. Use chalk to mark a straight line across the hoodie where you’ll cut.

Pro Tip: If your hoodie has a pocket, you can choose to keep it on the crop top for a sporty vibe, or cut above it for a cleaner look.

Step 2: Cut the Crop Top

Take your scissors and cut straight across where you marked. This top raw edge will eventually become the bottom hem of your crop top. Don’t worry if it rolls a bit—sweatshirt fleece doesn’t fray badly, so you can leave it raw for a casual look or fold and stitch it for a polished finish.

Try it on quickly to check the length. Adjust as needed before moving on.

Step 3: Shape the Skirt Panel

Now grab the bottom half of your hoodie (the part you just cut off). This will become your skirt. Cut off the ribbed waistband so you’re left with a clean tube of fabric. Depending on the size of your hoodie, this fabric should wrap around your hips and thighs.

If the hoodie fabric feels too narrow, you can also cut along the side seams and insert extra fabric panels (from the sleeves or another old hoodie) to widen it.

Step 4: Add the Elastic Waistband

To make the skirt stay up, you’ll need to add an elastic waistband. Fold down the top edge of your skirt about 1.5 inches to create a casing. Stitch along the folded edge, leaving a 1-inch opening.

Attach a safety pin to one end of your elastic and thread it through the casing. Once it’s fully around, overlap the elastic ends by an inch and sew them together securely. Close the casing opening with a straight stitch.

Now you’ve got a comfy pull-on skirt!

Step 5: Finish the Crop Top

The crop top is technically done after the cut, but you can make it sturdier and cuter by:

  • Folding the raw hem under ½ inch and stitching it down
  • Adding elastic inside the hem for a cinched waist look
  • Cropping the sleeves shorter or cuffing them for warmer days
  • Sewing darts or taking in the sides for a fitted style

I left mine a bit loose for a laid-back campus vibe.

Step 6: Try On Your Set

Now comes the fun part—trying it on! Slip into your new skirt and crop top set. The matching fabric gives it that coordinated two-piece outfit effect that looks like something you’d buy in a trendy boutique.

Mine hits mid-thigh, which is perfect for class or lounging. The crop top balances the high-waisted skirt for a flattering silhouette.

Styling Your Hoodie Set

This upcycled hoodie set can be styled in endless ways:

  • For class: Pair with white sneakers, a tote bag, and layered gold jewelry.
  • For errands: Throw on a denim jacket and chunky trainers.
  • For going out: Add sheer tights, boots, and statement earrings.
  • For lounging: Wear it with slides and a messy bun.

You can even use different hoodie colors to create seasonal sets—a pastel hoodie for spring, a bold graphic hoodie for fall, or a neutral grey for year-round wear.

Extra Customization Ideas

Want to take your set to the next level? Try these fun add-ons:

  • Side slit skirt: Cut a 6–8″ slit on one side and hem the edges.
  • Drawstring waist: Reuse the hoodie’s original drawstring in the skirt waistband.
  • Ruffled hem: Add fabric from the sleeves as a gathered ruffle at the bottom of the skirt.
  • Cropped hoodie with hood: Leave the hood attached for a sporty two-piece set.
  • Off-the-shoulder neckline: Trim the neckline wider and hem for a trendy slouchy look.

Final Thoughts

Step-by-step tutorial on how to make a crop top and skirt set from an old hoodie.

I can’t believe how easy it was to turn my old hoodie into a matching crop top and skirt set. It only took a couple of hours, and now I have a unique outfit that no one else will be wearing on campus.

Upcycling isn’t just budget-friendly—it’s also eco-friendly. By repurposing old clothes, you’re giving fabric new life and reducing waste. Whether you’re into DIY fashion for fun, sustainability, or self-expression, this project is the perfect place to start.

Next time you find an old hoodie in your closet (or at the thrift store), don’t toss it—transform it! You’ll walk into class not just with a new outfit, but with a story to tell about how you made it yourself.
