To make a halter top from a t-shirt, you need to know the right way to measure yourself. Adjust the measurements in the tutorial to fit your dimensions into the existing t-shirt.

For this tutorial, you need to learn where the highest point of shoulder is located on a t-shirt. It is where the neckband seam meets the shoulder seam. From there, you’ll want to follow the neck seam down 3”, which will become the new neckline for halter top.

Review the neckline and armhole measurements from the tutorial. I’ve put together an illustrated version to help you take body measurement for clothing.

If you are altering a neckline or new armhole, we will always reference the highest point shoulder, or HPS. It’s a very important part of clothing construction!

DIY Halter Top Cutting Tips:

If you are new to the upcycle clothing world, this project gives you an idea for what to do with old t-shirts without sewing. This no sew DIY halter top only requires a simple cutting technique to alter the neckline and armhole of an old t-shirt.

Prepare a few materials in your sewing kit and review the no sew hacks to accomplish this DIY workout top.

  • Cutting Tools: In order to have clean cut lines, you need two things: fabric scissors or a rotary cutter. They are essential tools to quickly accomplish all DIY clothing projects. Sharpen your scissors or place a cutting mat underneath and start deconstructing the original t-shirt.
  • Fabric Chalk: When working on any no-sew project, I recommend using fabric chalk on the back side of the fabric. I always flip the shirt inside out and lay it flat to draw new lines using fabric chalk. If you have dark color shirt, go with white fabric chalk; and for light color shirts, pick a black chalk.
  • Hemming: Unless you adjust to a crop length top, we will be keeping the overlocked hemline of the original tee. But if you happen to shorten the length, do no worry! The new hemline won’t fray at all, make sure to keep nice clean and crisp bottom line.
  • Cut Edge: The great news is that knit t-shirts are easy to work with because the cut edges won’t fray like woven fabrics.
