DIY Vita Square Neck Silk Camisole Sewing Tips:
In this DIY Vita square neck silk camisole tutorial, you will learn how to sew delicate fabric to make a top. It’s can be a bit intimidating to sew flimsy and thin fabric, however this sewing pattern is perfect for beginner to accomplish and take your sewing skills to the next level.
- Sewing Machine: Before start sewing, fine tune your sewing machine by checking the sewing machine’s throat plate for scratchy bits. I also recommend to file your nails to avoid any unwanted snags that can cause damage to the silk fabric.
- Needle & Thread: When sewing silk, use a very sharp needle such as Microtex needles instead of regular needles because they may cause snagging and puckering.
- Stitches: Consider hand basting your seams, especially under armhole before machine stitching, if your are new sewing silk satin. By doing so, it will help to align the two pieces together and avoid slipping while you feed the fabric through the machine.
- Tension: Always reduce the top thread tension on the machine and use a short stitch length of the machine when sewing delicate silk material.
- Hemming: Because silk frays a lot, we need to do a double fold hemming technique. First, hand sew a straight stitch or narrow zigzag stitch about ¼” from the bottom edge. Fold the edge of the fabric over the stitch line and press with an iron. Trim the fold about ⅛”, fold hem once more and press. Stitch between the two folds to seal the raw edges with a clean finish.
